Since nobody is picking up their phone calls, allow me to tell you, poor neglected Xanga, what my evening was like.  Actually, the story begins last night.  Fiance wants to go to the store to pick up gift cards for our primary care preceptors, since our last day is tomorrow.  I think, oh, well, I'll bake something for our preceptors as well!  I decide to make blueberry crumb bars, and pick up some butter at the store, since I'm out.  I'm thinking I'll pick up some blueberries at Costco today, since they have a HUGE container on sale for something like $7.

So today, after work, I drop by Costco to get the blueberries.  I then drop by Fiance's apartment, since I forgot to get lemons yesterday and he has some in the fridge.  I decide I have enough blueberries to double the recipe, and put everything together to get that done.

This is where I start regretting that I doubled the recipe.  I squeeze twice as many lemons, zest twice as many lemons.  I take my tiny pastry blender and blend FOUR (yes, FOUR) sticks of cold cold butter into a huge bowl of flour.  By the end, I'm practically sweating bullets and my hands and forearms are sore.  But I think, "It'll be worth it.  These bars are amazing!  And everyone will love them!"  So I finish my half hour of blending the dough, pat it carefully into pans, put in the blueberries, and put it in the oven.  45 minutes, saith the recipe.

At 33 minutes, I start smelling the dough, and I take a look.  It's barely browning, so I decide to wait until the 45 minute mark.  After all, on the blog, the blogger had to add 10-15 minutes.  I'm watching Weeds and finally eating my dinner at 9pm, so the microwave timer lets me know that 45 minutes have passed.

And the damn thing is burnt.  I'm tempted to scream expletives but I'm almost too tired too.

So, to continue pounding a non-funny joke into the ground....

Costco sized carton of blueberries.... $6.49+tax
A pound of butter... $2.49 + tax
My entire evening... well, my labor is technically free

Burning a double batch of blueberry crumb bars?  Enough to make Alice grumpy for DAYS.
